Tightness classes and wet zones: VT and VA

Where a wall is painted rather than tiled, MVK matches the paint system to how much water that surface really sees — using two classes and the same wet-zone logic as the rest of the wet-room standards.

Two classes

MVK painted systems come in two classes, set as a minimum against Boverket's building regulations:

• Class VT (wet zone 1) — a watertight surface.
• Class VA (wet zone 2) — a water-repellent surface.

A system that meets VT automatically meets VA. Surfaces likely to be hit by liquid water need a watertight, age-resistant layer (designed for movement, chemical and biological durability, and vibration); surfaces exposed only to splash, wet-cleaning or condensation need a water-repellent finish.

Wet zone 1 (paint with VT)

• Walls floor-to-ceiling at the bath and shower, and at least 1 metre beyond them.
• The inside and gable of a fixed screen wall.
• Walls that get water spill — for example behind a wall-hung WC.

A fixed screen wall is one at least 2 metres high; if it doesn't reach the ceiling, its top edge is wet zone 1.

Wet zone 2 (paint with at least VA)

• Other walls in bath/shower rooms, laundry walls, and rooms with a water heater.
• Walls exposed to splash, wet-cleaning, condensation or high humidity.
• Ceilings in all wet rooms.

Zone 2 may be painted with VA or the stronger VT — and MVK's advice is that if in doubt, use VT.
