Waterproofing is only as trustworthy as the people and system behind it. GVK — the foundation that publishes Sweden's waterproofing trade rules, "Säkra Våtrum" — exists to make that trustworthy by controlling who installs the membrane and how they're checked.
Who GVK is
GVK is a foundation backed by Sweden's property owners, housing cooperatives (HSB, Riksbyggen, Sveriges Allmännytta, SBC), the flooring trade (Golvbranschen GBR), the installation companies and the insurance industry (Svensk Försäkring). Together they publish the trade rules for waterproofing in wet rooms, administered through AB Svensk Våtrumskontroll. The shared goal is simple: cut the water damage that badly executed membranes have caused for decades. The current edition (January 2026) replaces the 2021 edition and is harmonised with Boverket's building regulations (BFS 2024:8).
Only authorised companies, only qualified people
Waterproofing under GVK is carried out by GVK-authorised companies. Within them, the work is led by a qualified supervisor (behörig arbetsledare) and carried out by a qualified fitter (behörig montör), each holding industry credentials (branschlegitimation). Authorisation isn't a badge you keep forever untested.
Audited, documented, kept honest
Authorised companies operate under GVK's quality system, with documentation and deviation handling built in, and are subject to recurring audits (Golv- & Våtrumskontroll). Those audits maintain a consistently high standard and feed back new experience for continuous improvement — which is why an installer's authorisation actually means something.
