The Electrical Safety Act sets the responsibilities; the technical "how" lives in the Swedish electrical installation standards. In a bathroom, those standards drive the details that keep people safe where water and electricity meet.

Zones

A bathroom is divided into zones based on proximity to water. Each zone limits what equipment may be installed and the ingress-protection (IP) rating it must have, so nothing unsuitable ends up where it can get wet. A socket, a light or a heater is chosen for the exact zone it sits in.

Residual-current protection

Circuits serving wet areas are protected by a residual-current device (jordfelsbrytare) that cuts the power in a fraction of a second if current leaks to earth — typically rated at 30 mA. It is the single most important protection against electric shock, and the difference between a fault that trips harmlessly and one that injures someone.

Equipotential bonding

Exposed metal parts are bonded together so they cannot sit at dangerous voltage differences relative to one another — another layer of protection against shock.

Correct fixtures, tested and recorded

Luminaires, sockets, heated floors and towel rails are all specified to their zone, and the finished installation is tested and the results recorded. The 2026 wet-room tiling rules specifically address electrical installations in wet rooms, so the electrics are coordinated with the waterproofing rather than cutting across it.
