Safe Water Installation

Built-in mixers, recessed WC cisterns and washing machines

Concealed fittings and recessed cisterns hide their connections inside the wall. Here are the watertight-recess, leak-indicator and shut-off rules that keep those hidden points from leaking.

Anything built into a wall β€” a concealed mixer, a recessed WC cistern β€” hides its connections exactly where a slow leak is most dangerous. SΓ€ker Vatten treats each as a special case.

Built-in tap-water fittings

A mixer or shower device built into a wall must have all its connections in a watertight space with a leak indicator that opens into a room with a watertight floor where a leak is easy to see (never into the bath or shower area). The leak-indicator pipe again follows the 20 mm inner diameter and 60 mm clearance rules. The mounting box must be designed so couplings can be exchanged, and β€” if set in a waterproofed wall β€” must be tested and approved for connection to that waterproofing without damaging it.

Recessed (concealed) WC cisterns

A recessed cistern must sit in a recess with watertight walls and floor and a leak indicator opening into a space with a watertight floor. Any prefabricated waterproof recess construction must be tested and approved for connection to the wall waterproofing. Water connections need easily accessible shut-off valves, and the recess floor must be at least level with the floor outside it so water can escape to where it is seen. In rooms that are not wet rooms, the recess is still waterproofed behind and to the sides of the cistern up to its top.

Washing machines

A washing machine belongs in a room with a floor drain. It may go in a kitchen only if there is a watertight floor surface under it combined with a water-leak breaker, or a floor drain and water alarm. Shut-off valves must be visible and easy to reach; connecting pipes must be tested and approved; and the drain hose is fastened under the units or at the height of the machine's top edge. A capped connection left for a future machine should sit empty behind a shut-off valve, so stagnant water can't breed bacteria.
