Sealing every weak point — drains, pipes, fixings and repairs

A waterproof membrane never fails across a flat wall — it fails at the holes: the drain, the pipe, the screw, the threshold. GVK devotes an entire section to sealing these penetrations, because they are where wet rooms actually leak.

Sealing the penetrations

The rules cover each weak point in turn:

• Floor drains — the membrane sealed to the drain's clamping connection.
• Pipe penetrations with waste pipes in floors or walls — sealed with the system's dedicated collars.
• Pipe penetrations with tap-water or heating pipes in walls — sealed to the pipe or sleeve.
• VVS products and other products in floors or walls — each sealed to the membrane.
• Door openings and windows — detailed so water is contained and can't run past the seal.
• Partial repairs of an existing membrane — done to the same standard, not patched over.

Fastenings that don't become leaks

Anything fixed into a wet wall or floor is a potential leak path, so GVK governs fixings too: into massive construction, into board construction, timber studs or noggings, fixing products with adhesive, and the specific case of WC and bidet. Every fastening is sealed back to the membrane with suitable, durable material.

Why this is the make-or-break section

You can install a flawless membrane across a wall and still flood the structure through one unsealed pipe collar or one bare screw. The discipline here — every penetration and fixing treated as a designed, sealed detail — is what separates waterproofing that holds from waterproofing that merely looks finished.
