Adhesive, tiles, grout and later installations

Once the membrane and substrate are right, the visible tiling still has to be done with the right materials in the right way — and it has to survive years of daily use and the occasional later drilling.

Matched materials

BBV governs the finishing materials: adhesive (8.1), ceramic tiles (8.2) and grouts (8.3), each suited to the location and compatible with the membrane system, and applied per the installation instructions. The wrong adhesive or grout in a wet, warm environment is a slow failure — so the material is chosen for performance, not just colour.

Flexible (movement) joints

Rigid grout everywhere would crack as the building moves. BBV requires flexible joints (8.4) where surfaces meet — internal corners, wall-to-floor junctions, changes of material — so movement is absorbed at a soft joint instead of cracking the tile or grout. It's why a good bathroom has a neat line of flexible sealant exactly where you'd expect stress.

Later installations

Life happens to a finished bathroom — a shelf, a rail, a new fitting. BBV covers subsequent installations (9): fixing things to a finished tiled, membraned wall later must be done so the watertight layer isn't compromised. A carelessly drilled hole after handover can undo the whole system, so the method matters even years on.
