Safety in use: slips, falls, hot water and glazing

The bathroom is statistically one of the most accident-prone rooms in any home — wet floors, hard surfaces, hot water and glass. BBR's "safety in use" chapter (chapter 8) is written to protect the people who live there, and much of it lands squarely in the wet room.

Slips and falls

BBR requires protection against slipping (section 8:22): floor surfaces in wet areas must limit slip risk, which drives the choice of tile finish and texture in a shower. Protection against falling covers level differences and, where relevant, stairs (8:232). Thresholds are kept as low and bevelled as possible to minimise tripping — while still being just enough to contain water.

Hot water and scalding

BBR limits hot tap water to protect against scalding. In practice this is delivered through the Säker Vatten temperature rules — hot water no higher than 60 °C from the heater, and capped at 38 °C at taps with special accident risk (such as where children are present).

Glazing

Glass near floors and in wet areas — shower screens, glazed doors — must be safety glass or otherwise protected, so a slip doesn't turn into a serious injury.
